Learn About Jenny’s Experience As a Lactation Consultant
Hello! Thanks for taking the time to check out how Milk Made Baby – your lactation consultant – can help you! I would like to begin by giving you a little background on who I am and how this all began so I could be here for you today!
My name is Jenny Reichenbach. As a registered nurse since 2011, I always knew I wanted to work in pediatrics, and so I did. I started off in a pediatrician’s office and then moved to Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital on a hematology/oncology unit.
A few years later, I became a mom. My experience in the weeks following the birth of my first son, Braden, gave me insight into the challenging and sometimes (a lot of times) stressful world of motherhood – trying to bond with your new tiny baby, grappling with the trauma your body has just been through, and surrounded by people with lots of opinions. On top of that, my baby was in the NICU, struggling to breathe and fighting an infection. The stress of early motherhood and having a sick child weighed heavily on me and my body. Breastfeeding was something positive, something in my control, something that ultimately bonded us, and something that right from the start made me feel like I was his mother, regardless of all the barriers I felt between us.
My breastfeeding process was definitely not without challenges: I had one heck of a time with oversupply issues and recurring mastitis (breast infections). I was sick with high fevers and flu-like symptoms on and off the first eight weeks of Braden’s life. It was a struggle. Did I want to breastfeed? Did I feel well enough to breastfeed? Was this the experience it was supposed to be? Without the support I had, it would have been much harder for me to endure the struggles and get past them. I became so intrigued by anything and everything breastfeeding and began reading whatever I could get my hands on.
All this made me realize – my true passion went beyond just pediatrics. I wanted to work in a role that allowed me to support new moms and help them thrive, even during the stressful process of learning to breastfeed. And so my journey to becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) began! I switched specialties to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where I could be working closer with moms and babies, and started my formal educational process to become an IBCLC.
Four years later, hundreds of hours with moms and babies, 90+ hours of lactation education, eight science courses, and passing the boards…I am now able to help you make breastfeeding be what you hope it to be.
